Youth Ministry Judicatory MEMBERSHIP

The Center for Youth Ministry (CYM) provides over 40 resources for youth ministry. It includes five youth ministry programs, four confirmation programs, retreats, trip guides, mission activities, liturgies and more! There are two judicatory options available:

                      1, MEMBERSHIP
                      2. SPONSORSHIP

The CYM Judicatory Membership provides every congregation in your diocese (synod, presbytery, etc.) access to these resources during your membership term. The advantage to this is that congregations will have a broad range of resources. If one resources doesn't work well, they can simply download another one. Smaller congregations, in particular, benefit from access to programs they otherwise may not be able to afford. Larger congregations can be asked to help pay for the judicatory membership. Or, a single donor may be willing to fund this membership -- supporting youth ministry is often an easy thing to fund for someone who wants to make a real difference.

The CYM Judicatory Membership is best suited for dioceses (synods, presbyteries) without a youth ministry staff person. It has the benefit of giving dioceses something of value to give to congregations. Youth ministry is one of the most popular ministries -- so providing these resources is a way a diocese can support that ministry in its congregations.

The CYM Judicatory Sponsorship is a partnership between the diocese (synod, conference) and LeaderResources that provides a 25% discount to congregations who chose to become a CYM member. It is ideal for a dioceses that want so support congregational youth ministry but has more limited funds at the diocesan level.

Judicatory Memberships and Sponsorships are available for the Center for Youth Ministry (CYM). You can choose the option that best fits your needs:

1.  MEMBERSHIP: Provides all 40+ resources in the CYM to all congregations in the judicatory at no cost to them for use while the membership is in effect.

2.  SPONSORSHIP: Provides a 25% discount to all congregations purchasing the CYM and a discount on CYM training conducted by LeaderResources trainers. LeaderResources provides an honorarium to a CYM Diocesan Coordinator appointed jointly by the diocese and LeaderResources.

A judicatory is an administrative entity[1] that is normative in your denomination, is responsible for managing the license agreement and remits the annual fee in one payment. (Examples are a diocese, synod, presbytery, conference, etc.)

Number of churches = what you report to your denomination as your member churches. Camps, conference centers and schools must obtain their own membership.

[1]In other words, an entity that exists legally (is incorporated, has bylaws, etc.) has a budget, staff, mission, etc. This is not designed for informal networks or groups assembled for this purpose only.

How can we pay for this?

Budgets are tight everywhere, so the first question judicatory staff have is: How can we find the money to pay for this? While it is generally possible to add this to a diocesan budget after the first year, getting that first year funded is often a challenge.

We have offered Judicatory Memberships for years and have heard how dioceses found those funds:

  • If your congregations have purchased the CYM in the last three months, we will subtract their fee from the cost of your first year membership fee.
  • If you order in the fall, we are willing to split your first year's fee over two budget years (pay half now and half in January). Or call us to talk about a payment plan if you need time to raise funds.
  • Ask your largest and/or endowed congregations to contribute to the diocese to support this ministry.
  • Some bishops have discretionary funds that can help fund the first year's fee.
  • Some dioceses have asked all congregations to contribute -- and sometimes have raised more money than they needed!
  • Ask individual donors to contribute -- youth ministry is very popular and this is something many people would be willing to support.
  • While congregation budgets also may not have extra funds, an request for donations often leads to significant contributions. E.g., one youth group asked their parish family to give $20 or whatever they could afford and then passed the hat -- literally! Five minutes later they had almost double what they needed to pay for their congregational membership.
  • Set up a diocesan Angel's Fund -- and invite individual donor to be an Angel Investor and invest in the youth of the church
  • Take a special offering at your diocesan convention -- tie it to a youth ministry report or perhaps a presentation or participation by youth (e.g., during a worship service where you lead the music).

We hope these ideas will help you come up with some creative ways to find the funding for a judicatory membership.
