Jeremiah: The Prophet & The Potter
In the stories of Samuel, David, Mary, Esther and others - we are reminded that God often has special tasks for young people - even children. In this cycle, we study the story of Jeremiah, a prophet who was called as a child and told to bring God's messages to the kingdom of Judah.
Some of the messages Jeremiah heard from God were very harsh, telling Judah they would be destroyed if they refused to follow God and act like God's people. Many of the prophecies predict the consequences of wickedness and separating from God. Jeremiah agonized over Judah and is sometimes called "the weeping prophet" because of his distress over the destruction of the temple and the city of Jerusalem (See Jeremiah 8:18-9:1).
In our lessons, we will not over-emphasize the dire consequences that Jeremiah preached, but it is impossible to tell the story of Judah (and therefore of Jeremiah) without touching on these things, so this is a good unit to gently help children think about big questions like "Why does God allow bad things to happen?" or "Does God cause suffering?" -- which is an important discussion to have in a world where unpredictable things happen, even as we remember that God loves us and promises to be with us.
