Leadership of Congregational Song Cantor
Vocal leadership within worship experiences has a history as long as that of the organized church. The human voice is the most ancient and natural of musical instruments. The contribution of the cantor is different than that of the organist, choir or other musical instruments and can equip and lead the congregation in the liturgy, hymns, prayers or other offerings of song either in collaboration with other instrumentalists or as a noble leader.
This course explores the various roles of a vocal leader, seeks to empower the participants to understand and practice the skills needed and provides opportunity to practice and develop personal musicianship. Extensive use of hymnody reflected in each congregational home, exposure to additional appropriate tunes and texts and service music is of primary emphasis. Included in the course are opportunities for singer as officiant, as soloist and as teacher of new music, as well as experiences with a variety of accompaniment instruments.
