Leadership of Congregational Song

Guitar

The primary goal of this practical track is to experience how the guitar can be used to accompany and at the same time lead congregational singing. Knowledge of basic guitar chords is necessary as the course is not designed to teach one how to play the guitar from scratch, but rather how to interpret the music and encourage singing.

Each session includes an assignment. An important part of the assignment is for the participant to prepare an accompaniment for use in class the next session. This is important because it allows: (1) the class to sing often, taking note of issues encountered as singers, and (2) each person to lead the congregational song on the guitar while people are singing. Feel free to adjust the assignment list appropriately. There may be too much for each session’s assignment list and in some cases not enough. At least one hymn should be prepared by each participant for leading the class at the next session.

It is assumed that the person teaching the course using these materials is a music professional with teaching skills. The Leadership Program for Musicians provides training and certification for those who want to organize a local training program using these courses – see their website for more information. LPM Certified Coordinators receive a substantial discount for use of the course materials.

Session Content
Each session provides goals, content material (some designed as handouts), reading assignments and activities and/or practice as appropriate. Sessions are designed to be an hour to an hour and a half in length although the number of students and length of practice time may require adjustments.

Price
These materials are licensed for use on an annual basis. You must renew your license annually to continue using the materials. This also entitles you to all upgrade and improvements made to the materials during the program year. Materials are downloadable from this website - you will be given login information after you complete your order. You may return to the website to download additional copies of this program at any time.

Annual licensing fee: $495 per course
LPM Coordinator with a current certification: $100 per course ($75 in 2008)
LPM Coordinator with a lapsed certification: $195 per course

Philosophy Of Church Music I
And II
This course is designed to acquaint the student with various historic and contemporary views of church music. Student will be expected to form and/or refine a philosophy of church music that is responsible, consistent, and subtle. A goal of the course is that the students will improve in the ability to articulate, in speech and in writing, practical applications of a philosophy of church music.

Resources For Effective Music
Ministry
This course is very practical in nature, a sort of “nuts and bolts" approach to developing skills and knowledge of resources. It include subjects such as musician-clergy relations, pastoral skills, arranging hymns as anthems, selecting music for worship and more. Also includes over 90 pages of reproducible handouts for participants.

Teaching New Music Course
Everything sung by the congregation or the choir was at one time "new" to the singers. Because most people who attend churches are not experienced music readers, assistance in learning music which they are expected to sing will increase their ability to participate and encourage their interest in the church's song. Techniques presented in this course will be useful in teaching both congregations and choirs.

Principles Of Choral
Leadership
The first five sessions are designed to introduce students to the basic skills of choral conducting. The second section of the course deals with vocal pedagogy. Its intent is to teach choir directors to help volunteer singers develop their vocal skills and improve their singing ability.
