Pilgrimage: Seeking the Kingdom of God
by Phyllis Vos Wezeman, Anna L. Liechty and Judith Harris Chase
Take your VBS on a pilgrimage to five Medieval pilgrimages destinations: Rome, Canterbury, Santiago de Compostela, Dunfermline (Scotland) and Croagh Patrick (Ireland). During their imaginary journey, they will learn about the life and legacy of a Saint revered since the Middle Ages and pretend to make the trek to see and hear the story for themselves.
Large group instruction takes place in the Pilgrim Gathering and in the Opening and Closing Town Assemblies while small group teaching occurs in Guild Meetings. Each day participants visit the Street Fair where activities and projects help create an understanding of the pilgrimage destination and help demonstrate how each person of faith followed the example of Jesus. In the process, Pilgrims learn the importance of seeking a spiritual direction for their own lives today.
This program has five sessions, designed for VBS or other Christian Education settings - including schools. It can be an intergenerational program as youth and adults learn while leading. If you have J2A as your youth ministry program, this can be a great way to introduce J2Aers to the concept of pilgrimage (and maybe help them select a pilgrimage site) and a way for the YAC group to share their pilgrimage experience with others in the congregation. [To learn more about J2A click here.]
The manual (with almost 400 pages!) gives you detailed instructions on how to set up your Medieval pilgrimage destinations with all of the activities for the Guild booths at the street fair. Lists of everything you need are included along with templates for drawings and projects, scenarios for the sessions and additional background materials for the leaders. If your team wants a program that makes planning easy, this one's got everything you need spelled out for you, This resource is a downloadable file – permission is granted to the purchasing church to make as many copies as needed to implement the program. A PDF file is provided for printing and a WORD document file is provided for you to customize the resource.
